Should You Spray Paint Your Front Door An Unusual Colour?

With a season filled with bright, colourful inspiration blooming, many homeowners are looking for a major change to the look of their home.

To that end, getting their front door spray-painted can be an exceptional way to add a personal stamp to your home, and by getting in touch with experts, you can enjoy factory finish benefits in as little as half a day.

Because we have access to thousands of colours and a colour matching service with our 2K Selemix paints, the only limit to the colour of your front door is your imagination. You can have any colour you like, but should you?

Many people like to stick with conventional colours, including off-white, neutral shades or dark brown, charcoal, black, navy or deep red colours that often act as a neutral shade when framing the right house.

In the right circumstances, however, bold, unique and unusual colours will perfectly fit your house, and to understand if your home is the right fit, here are some questions to ask yourself about your home and your choice of colour.

Can You Spray Paint Your Door Whatever Colour You Want?

A remarkably common question we get asked after showing just how many colours are on offer is which ones you are even allowed to use for your house.

Generally speaking, you are free, within reason, to decorate your home however you want, but there are some potential exceptions that you should be mindful of.

If your home is in a conservation area or under an Article 4 Direction, there may be restrictions on certain types of work, which can include ensuring that your home meets certain aesthetic guidelines.

A listed building, for example, may be required to have doors and colour schemes which retain the existing character of the heritage architecture, although to what extent this applies depends on the specifics of the building in question.

In most cases, however, these will not apply, and you should be free to paint your door any colour you like.

Does Your Front Door Face A Main Road?

From a legal implication to a more practical consideration, front doors which face main roads should generally avoid being painted in a pale colour, such as white, eggshell or pastel shades.

The simple reason for this is that the dust, dirt and debris that is kicked up by constant car traffic will eventually stain the door. Whilst the robust, hard-wearing paints are easy to clean, it does mean you have to wipe the dust away more often.

A darker shade, such as a navy blue, can hide this far better.

What Colour Are The Other Doors In Your Neighbourhood?

Whilst you do not have to conform to the aesthetic whims of your neighbours, if there is a clear style throughout the rest of the homes on the road, then be aware that it could make your home stand out more than you might expect.

However, if everyone else is trying new styles and looks, or there is no consistent style to be mindful of, then you have far more options to work with.

It is possible to find your chosen colour in a shade that is more acceptable to neighbours. For example, if every other door is monochromatic, then a dark purple or cobalt blue could work really well.
